Locum Tenens is More Than a Domestic Phenomena

Locum Tenens is More Than a Domestic Phenomena
posted by Alan Lakomski on
12 May 2005 at 11:13 pm
Locum tenens has become both a lifestyle choice and
necessity well beyond the borders of the US. Locum tenens is now common place in
Europe, the Caribbean, Australia and New Zealand.

More than ten years ago, my group, Global Medical Staffing, pioneered the
organization of international locum tenens. We've placed thousands of doctors in
such far-flung places as Australia, the Caribbean, the UK and New Zealand.
Physicians have tended use our international locum tenens assignments as both
career and personal-growth expanding sabbaticals. The assignments provide
medicos the means of exploring a new health care system and exotic pathology all
while having a bona fide travel and cultural adventure.

The net result is that the physicians return with new skills, experience and
perhaps most important, reinvigorated. Because the pace of work tends to be
slower abroad (nearly no one is as work obsessed as we Americans are), doctors
often feel like they are on vacation because they don’t have to work horrific
hours.
